Arrgggh! Moving slow this am, did too much yesterday, haha! The joys of being in your 70’s!
Sun is beginning to hit the walls of the hollow. Shorter day length down here and a north slope mean we manage to stay a little cooler most days and the creek brings us breezes except in mid day for about an hour.
Todays post?
Jeannie Lecture # 2,078 haha!
If you are starting out to build a homestead and plan on building a house using passive design, I suggest living on your land thru all four seasons before building .
It give you a base of information that is very important to passive design.
Learn where your winds come from each season. Where the major storms come from. Where is water run off iIn a rain? Where sunlight falls in the mornin and evening. Also the pattern the sun travels thru the seasons.
These things all impact best placement of windows and doors, orientation of your home, where you want vines to grow for shade etc.
Homesteading is wonderful, but it is a major trade off between cash a labor. Don’t kid yourself ! It is labor intensive.
You can decrease that level by building and planning in a smart way. Think ahead. Use the best materials you can manage. you have on storage for tools and. Materials.
We try to work with the land , after than push it into our form. Got a problem spot? Figure out a workaround, rather than investing hours of labor tring to reshape nature. (Ask me about our garden Spring one day!)
If a disaster happens , don’t allow yourself to be devastated. Frame it as a learning experience instead. and LEARN.
I think that is why we are here, anyway ..to learn and experience and practice joy and kindness.
